Rock Elm is an unsung hero of the woods available in the reclaimed industry. It is virtually unavailable on the modern, commerical market. As one Canadian paper company's website says, "Today, the species is much too rare for commercial uses."
However, Rock Elm is found fairly regularly in Wisconsin and Canada in old barns. It has a fairly light color with a hardness between oak and maple, and has the grain patterns of the Elm family. The old stuff has a nice range of color within a given board.
The drawback to Rock Elm is that the older, solid material tends to have unstable cracks that make the sizes diffuclt to push beyond 4" wide. (largely due to it's hard nature). To address this issue, we engineer a .30" reclaimed surface onto a plywood substrait. This give the floor more stability, better expansion/contraction properties, and reduces the price for larger material.
Rock Elm is a "must see" kind of wood. We love it here!
