This is a naturally, very dark White Oak Mantel from a barn in Norwood, Minnesota.
It may have been reused once already. It was fairly common for settlers to
dismantle their old log home or log barn and re-use the large timbers
in their new barns. The rounded edges and hand hewn ax-marked faces are typical of a log cabin.
This one has a very dark patina. That's in large part due to the ammonia in
the air in the cow barns. No... it doesn't smell like ammonia,
it just gets a great color. Stickley used a similar technique by exposing his
furniture directly to ammonia fumes.
While picture number one shows the intended front face, picture number 3 could very well be flipped upside down and used nicely. This has a really pretty face.
The unfinished ends will be cut and finished to size.
