Maple is the traditional butcher block countertop, but we honestly
don't make butcher block. Our countertops will withstand
a great deal of use (and abuse), but they're not made to be
cut on constantly.
This old reclaimed maple is a funny thing. I'm convinced that
the powder post beetles that chew up a lot of wood really
like the sweet taste of maple. We find that there is more "worm" trails
in maple than any other wood in the barn. We can play with the look. We can
brush the trails clean and leave the impressions; or we can
fill with an accenting epoxy.
We're sitting on some very large -- 12x12x10+ foot -- wormy
maple beams right now that could make some great countertops,
mantels, farm tables, or other furniture.
