Finished Fireplace Mantels

Most of our work is made-to-order; however, on occasion we get a chance to finish a few mantles here and there on our personal favorite beams. As much as we'd like to stock pre-finished fireplace mantels, it seems that once they hit this page, it's only a couple of weeks and they're sold. If you find something to your liking on this page, we probably have something similar in raw format -- even in different sizes.

Tree-like; Sawn Mantel 5ft -- AVAILABLE
Approx. 5.75in x 7.5in or so x 60in long

This 5FT piece just had a great natural, tree-like face with a circle sawn top and bottom. Like all of our wood, this is another reclaimed piece. It happens to be an old red oak "sleeper" beam (think floor joist) from a barn in Wisconsin.

Tree-Like; Sawn Mantel 6ft -- AVAILABLE
Approx. 6in x 6.75in or so x 72in long

Similar to the one above, this 6FT piece just had a great natural, tree-like face with a circle sawn top and bottom. Like all of our wood, this is another reclaimed piece. It happens to be an old red oak "sleeper" beam (think floor joist) from a barn in

Hand Hewn Oak Mantel Shelf--AVAILABLE
Approx. 3-4in x 10in x 72.5in long

This is a very nice oak mantel. It's more of a shelf style. It has nicely pronounced, original hand hewing marks and the original curve of the tree.

Dark Stained Red Elm Mantel--SOLD
Approx. 6in x 7in x 74.25in long

We're not real fond of staining, but this particular technique works pretty well. We use "asphaltum," which is basically tar that is thinned with mineral spirits. We then apply a couple coats of spray poly. The use of asphatum dates back thousands of yea

Strapped Oak Fireplace Mantel--SOLD
Approx. 5in x 12in x 72in

A great fireplace mantel made with two oak beams strapped together with hand forged strapped styled after some of the work by Greene and Greene architects.

Sawn Red Oak Beam Mantel --SOLD
Approx. 6.5in x 6.5in x 69.75in long

Here's a basic Red Oak sawn barn timber. It has a crack running through the face that adds some nice interest.
The wood comes from a Minnesota barn. Being oak with the circle saw marks, it's likely

Deep Cracked White Oak Mantel --SOLD
Approx. 5-6in Thick x 9in x 65in long

This piece came from a sill beam from an old granary in Minnesota. The sill beams get the most exposure to water and tend to rot a bit over 100 years. But, the result is a pretty stunning look. It’s worked it up as a 5.5FT mantel, but priced it as 4.5FT

Red Oak Chopping Block Mantel--SOLD
Approx. 5.75in x 10in x 60in long

We see a lot of different pieces come through the shop -- each with a story to tell. On occasion, we find one that has a more unusual story than others. By looking at all of the cut marks on the one side of this mantel, one can only guess...

Hand Hewn Oak w/ Peg Hole--SOLD
Approx. 5.75in x 9in x 58.25in long

This mantel comes from an old log cabin timber from Waterloo, Illinois. While we like to keep things all original, sometimes you do what you have to do. The front edge has been newly hand hewn.

White Oak Mantel with 5 Mortise Holes -- SOLD
Approx. 6in x 6in x 71in long

This beam was orginally a sill plate or similar the 5 holes are original and most likely had joists placed into them. We've seen mortise-and-tennon studs fairly regularly, but it's a a far cry from today's nailed in studs. This was real craftsmanship.

Old Log Cabin Timber Mantel -- SOLD
Approx. 6.5in x 7in x 63in long

This is a red oak, tree-like mantel timber from an old log cabin in Prior Lake, Minnesota. It has original axe marks where the original builder flattened out the sides. This one also has some nice natural, flowing lines to it. The color variation is also

White Oak Mantel Shelf - SOLD
Approx. 4.25 x 11.5in x 58.5in

This old wood mantel has great natural color. For character, it has it all -- worm trails, a couple of nail stains, and original ax marks. It's been cut on the top side to size it,

Sanded Smooth White Pine -- SOLD

A nice clean mantel that's been bleached even lighter in color and sanded super smooth.

Finished Red Elm Mantel Beam -- SOLD

This little gem has lots of great character and color. It's

Dark Patina White Oak Fireplace Mantel--SOLD

A very dark patina white oak mantel from an old barn in Norwood, MN.

Medium Dark Patina White Oak Mantel Shelf -- SOLD
appox 3.5in x 9in x 68in (5ft 8in)

This mantel shelf has some nice hand hewn character on the face and nice wood graining on the top and bottom.

Very Dark Patina White Oak Mantel Shelf -- SOLD
appox 3.5in x 11in x 68in (5ft 8in)

This is one amazingly heavy chunk of wood. While it is white oak, it developed and incredibly dark, deep patina over time.

Finished White Oak Mantel Beam -- SOLD
approx. 8in x 10in x 6ft

Another great mantel by Gary Kaufmann. He took the original hand hewn white oak piece and began to sand. He sanded and sanded, and sanded some more. After a bit, he revealed some great

Strong Patina White Oak Mantel Beam -- SOLD
approx. 7in x 9in x 58in

When people say "patina" this is what they're talking about.

Small Mantel Shelf --SOLD
Approx. 3in x 5.75in x 65.5in

A warm natural patina and rich color envelop this little mantel shelf. It was originally part of the rafter beam on an old barn. It has a couple of angled notches cut out there the rafter...
